A Committed Life - Erik Myers
Whether discussing athletes, movie stars, or the neighbor next door, there are two things we love about hearing people’s stories: the struggle - and the overcoming. Nobody knows more about either end of that spectrum than seven-figure sports card collector Erik Myers - who faced more adversity in his childhood and teenage years than most will in their lifetime.
Growing up in an alcoholic home and facing abuse at the age of just 5 years old, Myers’ early path led him - perhaps predictably - to an adolescence filled with drug abuse and criminal behavior. It was during those early trauma-filled years that he first discovered a love for sports cards, using a savant-like memory for sports analytics to escape the depression and anxiety that became a staple of his childhood and for many years beyond.
Eventually, after burning bridges with family and friends and finding himself living on the streets, Myers vowed to devote himself to whatever positive path presented itself next, a saving grace that came in the form of a fellow recovering addict who gave him work and showed him kindness and patience as he began getting his life on track. Finally, after two decades of struggle, Myers was able to find some stability and purpose, a change that would ultimately lead him to becoming one of the premiere experts in sports-card memorabilia, buying and selling tens of millions worth of the industry’s most prestigious holdings.
